Matej Kren’s Tower of Books, Prague

Step into the foyer at Prague City Library and you will be greeted by a looming tower of books. It’s an installation by Slovak artist Matej Kren which uses a clever mirror trick to make the inside of the tower seem never-ending.

The official name for the installation is Idiom and it was constructed in the library foyer in 1998. Looking down it, you could be gazing into Alice’s famous rabbit hole. Look up, and it could be a twister of books ready to transport you to Oz.

The books are packed tightly together, reminding us of intertextual links between authors and stories and how literature is an intricate tapestry. Many threads weave together to create one ever-developing picture.

Everyone who tells stories and everyone who listens are connected by this strange, book wormhole through time.
